Lyeth • California Red • 2019

When it comes to the art of the red wine blend—inspired of course by the best reds of Bordeaux’s greatest wine houses—California's Lyeth has cracked the code. And then some! Our users have been scrambling to scoop these bold red wines up—especially like this plummy, silky and easy-going 2019 Lyeth California red. And it makes sense that this producer would be top-notch when it comes to mixing and matching Bordeaux’s noble grape varieties: back in 1988, Lyeth was one of the founding members of the Meritage Association—the society dedicated to promoting Bordeaux-style blends crafted in the USA! Now that’s what we call putting your money where your mouth is.

When it comes to this delicious, over-achieving blend, Vivino reviewer Katie C. has all the right ideas: “WOW! This one delivers for the price - velvety texture, rich dark fruit, and a luscious mouthfeel. Perfect and easy to pop open for a midweek BBQ or grab for an easy host gift. I'll def stock a few bottles in the pantry as a reliable go-to.”

On a 1972 trip to Bordeaux, France, Lyeth Winery founder Chip Lyeth caught the “wine bug.” Within a year, he had broken away from the family Colorado banking business, purchased Brignole Ranch in the Alexander Valley, and began studying winemaking and viticulture at UC Davis in California. His Bordeaux-inspired obsession with the art of blending culminated in the establishment of Lyeth Estate in 1981. Chip’s passion and spirit for the blend continue unabated to this very day at Lyeth (now under the stewardship of the Boisset Collection), with DeLoach Vineyards’ Katie Carter leading the cellar.
